Mom’s night in

Keith and Samantha have a Father/Daughter dinner tonight.  That gives me a chance to enjoy one of my favorite treats – shad roe.  Not only do I get to enjoy it, I get to enjoy it without my child telling me how gross she thinks it is.  (For the uninitiated, shad roe is the egg sac from shad when they are spawning and it is only available for a short time in February and March.)  I’ll cook some bacon and then saute the shad row in some of the bacon grease.  I’ll grab a glass of wine and enjoy a little bit of quiet time and be happy when they are back!  Here’s a picture from a previous shad roe dinner.

Girl’s night in

Keith has an end of season paddle tennis event tonight.  That meant Samantha and I were on our own.  The solution – bacon and eggs.  In her case the eggs were poached, in my case it was shad roe – the egg sac from the female shad.  Shad roe season is winding down, the seafood man said maybe one more week.  I cooked the bacon and then sautéed my shad roe in a little bit of the bacon grease while I poached Samantha’s eggs.  I was going to have asparagus but I’m battling a cold so laziness won out and I bought some brussels sprouts with lemon zest from prepared foods at Graul’s.  Samantha only eats the yolk of her poached eggs and somehow tonight I managed to cook her eggs in such a way that the yolk of one of them lifted out of the white in one piece.  Sadly, I have no idea how I did that, making it hard to replicate.  Here she is enjoying her dinner with each element (eggs, bacon and toast) plated separately.

Something for everyone

One of my favorite seasonal treats is shad roe.  It is the egg sac from the female shad when they spawn and it is only available in February and March.  While I adore it, everyone else in my household thinks it is disgusting.  That makes it a little harder for me to fit into the rotation.  On Thursday I went out for a Thai lunch with co-workers.  My husband loves Thai food so I told him I would make him a Thai dinner.  I had some leftover Panang curry paste in the fridge so I fixed that with chicken for him.  Samantha had bacon since I had fixed it with the shad roe and had it with frozen pancakes and I enjoyed my shad roe.  What an unlikely combination!
