Getting ready for New Year’s Eve

We’ve enjoyed two nights of very easy dinners – chicken sandwiches with the leftover chicken last night and steaks on the grill with leftover potato gratin tonight.  That has given me time to start thinking about New Year’s Eve.  We don’t really like to go out on New Year’s Eve – much more fun to stay in and cook something really good.  We have spent many a New Year’s Eve with our favorite friends and this year is no exception.

We decided to fix tapas.  Tapas are Spanish appetizers and we are going to make a night out of cooking and eating, cooking and eating and cooking and eating.  It sounds more decadent than it is as many of the dishes are not that heavy.  Here is the list that Christie and I selected tonight:

  • Sauteed garlic mushrooms
  • Zucchini fritters with pine nut sauce
  • Patatas bravas
  • Spareribs in paprika sauce
  • Moroccan chicken kabobs
  • Spinach and mushroom tortilla
  • Monkfish with rosemary and bacon
  • Shrimp in garlic sauce
  • Mussels vinaigrette
  • Baked clams
  • Fried eggplant with cheese

We split up the grocery list and I’ll blog some of our favorite picks.  This may seem a little over the top in terms of the volume of things to cook.  If you are in for New Year’s Eve and you have a cookbook or two, flip through until you see something that sounds good.  Read the recipe through a couple of times to make sure you understand it and make a grocery list.  The nice thing about staying in and cooking on New Year’s Eve is that you are supposed to be up late so there is no rush.  Invite some close friends and cook together.  Buy some good wine and end the year on a good note.  The diet starts the next day!  🙂
